omgwtf geisha fabric

So I went to Jo-Anne’s today at great personal expense and tragedy.

Actually, I just had to beg my dad for a ride because our car is still broken. Anyway.

I got some acrylic paints and craft foam and a sheet of posterboard. I tested out the craft foam and found that I can get good shapes out of it, and that it paints well if finished properly, but that acrylic paint, while awesome, sucks for painting on craft foam. I knew it would, but I hoped….Oh well, at least they were on sale.

Anyway, while I was there my eye caught the most gorgeous, amazing, beautiful find ever: Jo-Anne branded thin brocade fabrics in Asian-themed patterns. I found a black fabric with a dragon and roses pattern across it in red that would be GORGEOUS on Christina for her kimono, and it’s reversible so I could feasibly make the obi out of it too. It’s ridiculously expensive in my world ($7 a yard), but cheap in the fabric world. I’m going to wait until Jo-Anne has a fabric sale and buy the shit out of that stuff. Oh yeah, baby.

Why not buy an actual kimono? VIA ebay. You can purchase one for under $20. That brocade stuff is made in China. Very overpriced to boot, and it looks tacky as a kimono. You can have the real thing for much less. A plain kimono will run you between 10 - 20, and if you buy from CHUU on ebay, you can get shipping within the US. An obi runs a little higher, but I am sure you could snag one for much cheaper then the price of the fabric you’d have to buy. Plus the real thing is so much better.

Because those AREN’T actual kimono. Real kimono are extremely expensive. Plus, why? I like making things. Just buying it would be boring. (Hence the “Costuming Blog” title XD).

And I’ve seen the brocade fabric made into kimono, it’s not bad. I won’t buy costumes online, ever. I’m a seamstress, why bother? :)
